Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is adamant she did not assault a woman in a bar earlier this week.

The Liz & Dick star was booked by police for third degree misdemeanour assault following an altercation with Tiffany Mitchell, 28, at New York City nightclub, Avenue, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

But Lindsay is adamant she did not punch the fortune teller.

However, she has allegedly admitted to friends that she did call Tiffany a "gypsy", but said it was because Tiffany's friends tried to steal her designer handbag.

Sources close to the actress told gossip website TMZ.com that the actress feels she was th! e victim of a well calculated setup.

She claims that shortly after she turned down Tiffany's offer of a palm reading, she noticed some of the psychic's friends gathering around her expensive purse at another table.

The troubled starlet, 26, was reportedly informed by several of her other friends in the club that Tiffany's pals had taken her black leather Celine handbag.

Lindsay is said to have immediately confronted Tiffany, and admits to calling her a "gypsy".

However, she claims she did not know the word was a slur and didn't lay a finger on the alleged victim.

Tiffany has hired civil rights lawyer Gloria Allred and is believed to be preparing to sue Lindsay for damages.

Boyband comes to defence

Meanwhile, Max George from boyband The Wanted has said the nightclub brawl has been blown out of proportion.

The singer has broken his silence about the Mean Girls star's fight, and defended Lindsay, describing her as a "top girl".

"We were just out and there was a bit of trouble with someone in the club. But it got blown out of proportion to be honest," Max told radio show host Jojo Wright in Los Angeles.

Lindsay had spent the evening with Max, 24, and his bandmates Jay McGuiness, 22, and Tom Parker, 24, at the club after their Madison Square Garden concert with Justin Bieber on Wednesday night.

The actress had reportedly set her sights on hooking up with Max and became "enraged" when she saw Tiffany talking to him.

But the singer insisted he was not the reason for the altercation.

"It wasn't me. I didn't instigate anything. It was nothing to do with me," he said.

And Max also revealed he would love to hang out with Lindsay again.

"Sh! e's cool.! She was a top girl. She's good fun," he said.

Lindsay has already received support from Max's bandmate Jay, who was spotted wearing a homemade 'Free Lindsay' t-shirt on stage during the group's concert in New York just hours after she was charged with assaulting Tiffany.
