The film, which shows Lohan starring alongside porn actor James Deen, was rejected by SXSW due to "quality issues," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The outlet quotes an alleged SXSW insider as saying that the film has "an ugliness and a deadness to it."
The Paul Schrader-directed thriller, which was also recently rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, revolves around young people in Hollywood and focuses on aspects of love, sex and success in the year 2012. The film also features "tons of nudity," including shots of Lohan "all natural," according to the magazine.
The actress was profiled on the set of the film by the New York Times in an article called "Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie," which detailed the difficulties filmmakers had working with the Lohan.
The article also detailed the film's raw love scenes, and described two porn stars, who were hired to take part in the film's four-way love scene, as "walking around completely naked" on set, which "freaked Lohan out." The story goes on to chronicle how Lohan isolated herself in a walk-in closet, refusing to remove her robe for the scene until other cast members stripped down with her.
On January 17, Deen opened up about the revealing expose, saying that while the article is somewhat accurate, Lohan is generally misunderstood.
"It's an accurate de! piction o! f the events that occurred, but told in a way to make the story more compelling," Deen told The Daily Beast. "She [Lohan] has a unique way of communicating. She's a child star who's been living in this fame world being chased by paparazzi. I tried to consider that in every interaction with her, so when she speaks, what could be construed as an insult by some was not necessarily intended to be an insult. It was just her communicating her interpretation of the scene."
On January 23, he also Tweeted: "I wish people would stop taking the standardly "controversial" and boringly negative route with THE CANYONS. It's actually a good movie..."
In June 2012, it was announced that Lohan would be appearing in the film role alongside Deen, and the film's screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis, who is known for writing novels like "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho," Tweeted the announcement.
"James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will star in THE CANYONS," Ellis wrote on July 11. He later added, "And I am beyond thrilled that James Deen and Lindsay Lohan will be playing the parts of Christian and Tara in THE CANYONS by BEE."
Elli! s also sa! id that the film will begin shooting in July. "Shooting THE CANYONS starring James Deen and Lindsay Lohan: July 9-31 in L.A. Could not have dreamed of a better cast. Lindsay nailed it," he wrote.
Lohan's co-star, Deen, is a 26-year-old adult film actor who won "Male Performer of the Year" at the AVN Awards in Las Vegas earlier this month.
The movie also had a Kickstarter campaign and raised its initial funding goal three days ago. Kickstarter is a site which allows people to raise money for creative projects online and anyone can pledge money toward the project for perks. The backers of the film have pledged $159,015 toward the movie.
