Lindsay Lohan in 'The Canyons': Foursomes, Firings and 5 Other Revelations
It's never a boring day when Lindsay Lohan is on set.
That's the overarching theme in a new behind-the-scenes profile on the plagued actress during her work on director Paul Schrader's film The Canyons.The movie, written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho), has garnered plenty of press since the casting of Lohan and porn star James Deenin the lead roles was announced.
In a new profile in New York Times Magazine, contributing writer Stephen Rodrick used his all-access pass to paint a harrowing picture of life behind the scenes of the struggling production. From tear-soaked tirades in hotel hallways to partying with Lady ! Gaga (anda four-way sex scene thrown in for good measure), Rodrick spares no expense in revealing the raw details.
Here are seven of the more tantalizing nuggets culled from the story, which is worth a read in its entirety:
Lohan was paid only $100 a day
The Canyons had a microbudget of around $250,000, with $150,000 coming from a Kickstarter campaign. Schrader, producer Braxton Pope and Ellis each put up $30,000 of their own money, as well. Lohan's deal was $100 a day plus a share of the profits, whatever that equals out to. The film was not chosen by Sundance and has yet to find a buyer.
She was contractually obligated to participate in a four-way sex scene
The other three actors in the scene were porn stars, which, according to the story, made Lohan uncomfortable. (Not to mention, it's revealed she wasn't thrilled working with Deenat all.) It wasn't until Schrader decided to get buck naked himself in an effort to make Lohan more comfortable (yes, that was his mentality) that Lohan participated in the gratuitous skinfest, albeit with a few shots of alcohol beforehand.
She really hated working on Liz & Dick
Lohan voiced her experience working on the Lifetime biopic to Schrader, saying the director was "a jerk," her co-star Grant Bowler was "a nightmare," and the crew was "unfriendly."

With a week left before shooting was to begin, Lohan canceled one scheduled rehearsal and was a no-show the following day, pushing Schrader to try and cut his losses and fire her. (He had another, not so good, French actress waiting in the wings just in case this actually happened.) After a dramatic plea filled with tears and plenty of door pounding, Schrader would eventually give in and bring her back. Lohan's excuse for the no-show? She said she was discussing the script with co-star Nolan Funk until early that morning and then took a sleeping pill.
Lohan likes it rough, even in rehearsals
At one point, Rodrick describes a scene where Deen was to physically confront Lohan, which required him to throw the actress to the ground. During rehearsal, Deen moved at half-speed, conserving his energy, causing Schrader to jump in and make sure Deen knew what he was doing. The director then stepped in and rehearsed with Lohan, throwing her so hard on the ground that "Lohan screamed and the crew gasped." The starlet then popped right back up, said it was great and asked to do it again. When they filmed the scene for real the next day, the scene went off without a hitch. Rodrick writes that after someone complimented Lohan's work on the scene, Lohan replied, "Well, Ive got a lot of experience with that from my dad.
Lohan missed two days of shooting because she partied with Lady Gaga
When word got around that Mother Monster arrived at the Chateau Marmont, all bets were off. Lohan partied with Gaga until 5:30 a.m. with a 6 a.m. call time, which, naturally, impeded her from arriving at her scheduled time at Cafe Med, where that day's shoot was to take place. She showed up to the restaurant at 9 a.m., plopped into a booth and called her doctor who examined her, saying she had an "inner ear infection." Shrader would be heard saying, Thats her doctor, hell say whatever she wants. I shot on! e day fro! m a stretcher. She could do it, but she doesnt want to.
Lohan knows how to work the system
Searching for a public place to shoot that didn't cost money, Lohan suggested shooting at The Grove in Los Angeles. According to the story, she said, "Look, we can shoot at The Grove, and we can get it for free. Well have Access Hollywood pay for it. Theyll film it, Ill answer three questions about the movie and then theyll pay for it. Its really easy. Theyll do it. You just have to know how to work it. They never did and instead the production would pay $3,000 to shoot at the Century City Mall.
