Lindsay Lohan is released from jail
>>> but first we begin with lindsay lohan 's overnight release from jail and what's next for the troubled actress. we have lee cowan with more on the story. good morning.
>> reporter: good morning, ann. yeah, lindsay lohan is indeed a free woman this morning -- sort of. she was locked up at an all women's facility since july 20th and was released early this morning. instead of going home she was escorted directly to rehab. some people say serving that part of the sentence could be just as tough.
>> lindsay lohan was released from custody at 1:35 this morning. per a court order , she has been sent directly to her next destination which is a treatment center.
>> reporter: freedom for lindsay lohan is fleeting, at least for now. her early morning release from her almost two-week stint behind bars is to be followed by confinement of a different kind. the judge is insisting that post-jail, a 90-day in patient drug treatment facility is the only way lohan will stop repeating her criminal, addictive behaviors.
>> i would like the transition sooner rather than later.
>> reporter: most experts agree three months may only be a start at recovery. either way , it's not lohan's choice.
>> the court is the one that's deciding which rehab facility she's going to go to.
>> reporter: it could be anywhere among a host of world renowned treatment facilities here in california. but wherever it is, it won't be cheap. at this facility in newport beach , for example, the price --
>> it will reportedly cost $75,000 for the three months she'll be there.! span>
>> reporter: lohan's previous adventures in rehab -- three at least -- have been less than successful. she's relapsed, all while trying to find work.
>> the hollywood cliche is that hollywood loves a comeback. that's true. if lindsay can clean herself up, she can think about coming back professionally.
>> reporter: her latest effort, a spoof of marilyn monroe in a soon to be released film called "underground comedy 2010 ".
>> the most offensive movie ever made.
>> reporter: it may be a bit part with a biting message.
>> lindsay lohan settles the score with the media.
>> reporter: that scene was shot just before lohan's jail sentence . her alcohol monitoring bracelet clearly visible. it may not have helped. the judge hopes rehab will.
>> reporter: lohan's attorney asked the judge for breathing room, 24 hours , before leaving the facility and headed to rehab, but apparently the judge thought that was a luxury lohan didn't deserve.
>> lee, thanks.
>>> donny deutsch is from an agency in new york city and dr. julie holland is a psychiatrist and author of "weekends at bell view." good morning to you.
>> good morning.
>> dr. holland , let me start with you. based on your experience and what we know about lindsay lohan 's situation, can you describe what may be her state of mind after 13 daily planeys in jail?
>> i think some people were expectin! g a paris hilton -like breakdown. that didn't happen. she survived being alone with herself which is a good first step. now she's got a lot of work to do. now the work begins. she's got a good three months of rehab ahead of her. hopefully she'll do well.
>> can you describe what will happen in rehab and what her chances are of recovery?
>> reporte
>> it depends on the program. a lot of rehabs are 12-step-oriented. what might be good is something called a dual diagnosis where they look not only at drug and alcohol abuse but look and see if there are other things going on psychologically. if she has depression, attention deficit disorder , bipolar disorder . there may be more than just alcohol and drugs here. you need a certain amount of time off medicines, off drugs to see what she looks like, what her baseline is. then you know what you're dealing with.
>> dr. holland , i want to bring donny deutsch into this. a lot of people watching have been rolling their eyes, including at the media for our coverage of the story. is it possible that lindsay lohan could emerge from this a winner, that she should -- if she can prove that she's better?
>> i'm going to be cynical. as a dad, this is a sad story. but i want to talk about the cold, hard business. right now, if you cast her in a movie. if an a director gets ahold of her where is there more appeal, a movie with her or natalie portman who's on the straight and narrow? we celebrate this stuff. robert downey , jr. she's an actress with chops. people in hollywood believe she can act. if she can get her act together she'll be bigger than ever. this is a crazy world .
>> but it's not as if -- if ! someone h! as talent like robert downey , jr., we forgive them and want to see the talent. if she didn't have talent that's a different story.
>> different story. she's a great actress and i can say, you know, this could be a plot for a great career move. look at britney spears . this is almost a model now. this is the crazy world we live in. there is so much heat on her, but she needs a serious director who's going to bet on her. she needs that guidance. i think she'll be bigger than ever.
>> part of what's in her favor is she's young. people see she may have an opportunity as she grows up. dr. holland , what can you tell us in terms of the support she's going to need, however, to get that. what she's about to go through is very difficult. can you describe just how?
>> you know, i think one of the things that might be helpful for her that they do in rehab is they treat the family as a unit. they treat the patient as part of a dysfunctional family . that might be helpful for her, is to pull the parents in.
>> dr. holland , thank you. donny
